Helpful Hints

If you are anticipating starting cosmetology school in the year 2017 and are interested in applying
for federal financial aid (Pell Grant and/or Federal Direct Student Loan), you must complete the 2017/2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please follow the instructions below to ensure the most accurate and efficient processing of your federal financial aid.

PLEASE NOTE: Your 2017/2018 FAFSA requires 2015 tax year information.

  1. Determine when to submit your FAFSA
    • If you have filed a 2015 Federal Tax Return electronically, you should wait three weeks after you file to complete and submit your FAFSA.
    • If you have filed a 2015 Federal Tax Return by mail, you should wait eight weeks after you file to complete and submit your FAFSA.
    • If you were not required to file a 2015 Federal Tax Return, you may submit your FAFSA at any time.
  2. Apply online using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.gov
    • Enter your FSA ID username and password to log in.
    • If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can register for one on the FAFSA login page.

If you are required to provide parent information on the FAFSA, your parent will also need to create a FSA ID.
To create your FSA ID, follow the instructions on the reverse side.

    • If you already created your FSA ID and do not remember your username and password, enter your email address, click on the appropriate link and follow the instructions.
  3. When answering grade level and degree/ certificate questions:
    • You are considered a “1st year undergraduate.” Please do NOT select
      “graduate/professional degree.”
    • You will be working on a “certificate
or diploma (occupational, technical or education program of at least 2 years).
    • Select “No” when asked if you will be working on a master’s or doctorate program.
  4. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
    • The easiest and most accurate way to enter your tax information is by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. In a few simple steps, you may be able to view your tax information and transfer it directly into your FAFSA.
Do NOT manipulate any field that indicates “IRS data was transferred from the IRS.” Otherwise, the data becomes invalid.

Your FAFSA will ask you to indicate a school code. Please indicate the code of your school location of choice as listed below.

How to create an FSA ID

The Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) is a username and password that has replaced
the Federal Student Aid PIN and MUST be used to log in to certain U.S. Department of Education websites. Your FSA ID confirms your identity when you access your financial aid information and electronically sign Federal Student Aid documents. If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can create one when logging in to fafsa.gov, the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS®) at www.nslds.ed.gov, StudentLoans.gov, StudentAid.gov, and Agreement to Serve (ATS) at teach-ats.ed.gov.

Because most scholarship
students are considered dependent,

YOUR PARENT MUST CREATE THEIR OWN FSA ID
in addition to the FSA ID that you create for yourself!

STEP 1

When logging in to one of the websites listed above, click the FSA ID link to create an FSA ID. (On the fafsa.gov page you will find this link in the menu bar in the upper left of the page near the “home” and “about us” links)

STEP 2

Create a username and password. Enter your e-mail address.

STEP 3

Enter your name, date of birth, Social Security number, contact information, and challenge questions and answers.

STEP 4

If you have a Federal Student Aid PIN, you will be able to enter it and link it to your FSA ID. You can still create an FSA ID if you have forgotten or if you do not have a PIN. (If this is your first application to college, you likely do not have a PIN).

STEP 5

Review your information. Read and accept the terms and conditions.

STEP 6

Confirm your e-mail address using the secure code which will be sent to the e-mail address you entered when you created your FSA ID. Once you verify your e-mail address, you can use it instead of your username to log in to the websites.

Remember – Only the owner of the FSA ID should create and use the account.

NEVER share your FSA ID.

You can use your FSA ID to sign a FAFSA right away. Once the Social Security Administration verifies your information in one to three days, or if you have linked your PIN to your FSA ID, you will be able to use your FSA ID to access the websites listed above.
